Evolution Trajectory & Milestones

A decade-long timeline across six crucial evolutionary phases.

2011–2015

Academic Seeds & Early SROI Pioneering

Between 2011–2015, interest in Social Return on Investment (SROI) began growing in academic spaces, marked by the introduction of SROI in the MM CSR program at Trisakti University and the interest of academics at IPB University (Institut Pertanian Bogor).

Bringing the Three Strands Together

On the practitioner side, Social Investment Indonesia (SII) hosted a seminar on impact measurement as part of the Social Investment Roundtable Discussion (SIRD) series at Hotel Kempinski, Jakarta, featuring Jeremy Nicholls (CEO of SROI Network International, later Social Value International) and inviting representatives from Trisakti, IPB, and Dompet Dhuafa — bringing together three previously separate strands: academia, practitioners, and philanthropy/zakat institutions.

Bandung Training & Network Establishment

This seminar was followed by an SROI Practitioner Training in Bandung led directly by Jeremy Nicholls. In December 2014, SROI Network Indonesia was introduced as a network for individuals and organisations interested in social value measurement, and was formally established in 2015 through a joint founding meeting between SII, Dompet Dhuafa, IPB, and CECT Trisakti University — when the global entity was still named SROI Network International, prior to becoming Social Value International in May 2015.

Formal Incorporation & SVI Affiliation

In late 2016, the network was formally registered as an association. In July 2018, SROI Network Indonesia officially became the Joint Member Network of Social Value International (SVI).

Transformation

Transforming into Social Value Indonesia (SVID)

Following a global paradigm shift — moving from SROI as a single focus to one approach within a broader Social Value and impact management framework — SROI Network Indonesia transformed into Social Value Indonesia (SVID), marking an expansion of focus from SROI alone toward how organisations understand, measure, manage, and communicate change for stakeholders.

Multi-Sector Ecosystem Expansion

SVID subsequently strengthened its role through training, workshops, Social Value Talks, webinars, as well as professional pathways and practitioner accreditation, making Social Value a core competency for more professionals. Starting in 2023, SVID membership grew rapidly, extending the ecosystem from early pioneers across three founding strands to a broad multi-sector network: NGOs, corporate/CSR, consultants, public organisations, and professional communities.

The Five Layers of Evolution

This journey encapsulates five interconnected layers building a comprehensive social impact ecosystem:

01

Knowledge

SROI introduced in parallel across academic, practitioner, and philanthropic spaces.

02

Practice

Organisations applying SROI methodology for real-world impact measurement.

03

Community

Convergence of the three founding strands through SIRD and the Bandung training.

04

Institutionalisation

Formation of a formal association and official affiliation as an SVI Joint Member Network.

05

Ecosystem

Continuous expansion into an inclusive, multi-sector social value ecosystem in Indonesia.

Future Horizon

The challenge moving forward is no longer merely introducing SROI, but ensuring Social Value principles are truly used to improve decision quality and accountability to stakeholders.

Moving from “measuring impact” to “managing for impact”.
